About 60% of America's Calories Come From Factory-Made Food

About 60% of the calories Americans eat come from ultra-processed foods. That's what studies of U.S. diets suggest.

"Ultra-processed" means products built in factories, not kitchens — often designed to be easy to grab, last on a shelf, and taste hard to resist.

So picture a full day of eating. For every 10 calories, about 6 come from these products. Sodas, candy, and chips, sure. But also many breads, cereals, and ready meals.

Two honest notes. That 60% is an average — some people eat far less of this, some far more. And "ultra-processed" is a broad label, not a verdict on any single food.
